Greystone (Slag) is not limestone, but the stoney material separated out from metals in the smelting process. The pieces tend to be small, very dense and more rounded than that of blasted limestone. This material has a high volume of powdered fines in the mix, making it much heavier per volume than the limestone options. These fines can help keep the stoney rocks in place. Also, the powdered fines in Greystone (Slag) also tend to harden up like concrete, over time, when exposed to rain.
Note:Greystone (Slag) is not recommended as a base for concrete. Greystone (Slag) is also not recommended as a base for a new driveway or road as it does not have enough bulk and larger stone to create a good solid foundation. Greystone (Slag) is a good, less expensive option for re-topping existing driveways and parking lots where cost may be a factor.
